Back to Magic: Preparing Black Girls for a New School Year

Confidence Comes First

As summer winds down, preparation for a new school year is about more than supplies. Black girls need confidence, encouragement, and reminders that their voices and ideas matter. Confidence at home builds resilience in the classroom.

The Realities They Face

Studies show Black girls are more likely to be disciplined unfairly in school and less likely to be identified for gifted programs. These barriers can undermine self-worth before the year even begins. Parents, educators, and communities must be intentional in creating balance.

Ways to Support This Month

  • Empower with words: Begin each day with affirmations or conversations that reinforce worth and capability.
  • Organize together: Help create study spaces, planners, or vision boards to set clear goals for the year.
  • Connect with role models: Highlight Black women leaders in science, business, arts, and activism as living proof of what’s possible.

Building Community

August is also a time to reconnect with community—friends, mentors, and family who reinforce identity and pride. Surrounding Black girls with support ensures they walk into the classroom ready, resilient, and radiant.

Call to Action

This month, let’s prepare Black girls with more than pencils and notebooks. Let’s equip them with pride, purpose, and the knowledge that their brilliance belongs in every space they enter.
