Why Representation in Costumes Matters
Costumes aren’t just outfits—they’re signals of who gets to be a hero, a leader, a scientist, or a legend. When Black girls see themselves reflected respectfully, it builds pride and belonging. When they don’t, it can reinforce harmful narratives.
Green Flags vs. Red Flags
Green Flags (Do This)
- Celebrate real Black women and girls in history: inventors, astronauts, artists, judges, entrepreneurs.
- Choose roles, not races: “scientist,” “pilot,” “game designer,” “chef,” instead of cultural stereotypes.
- Invite creativity: DIY badges, lab coats, notebooks, or vision-board props to personalize the character.
Red Flags (Avoid This)
- No “culture-as-costume”: skip pieces that reduce a people to clothing, hair, or sacred symbols.
- No skin-tone changes: face/skin color is never a costume.
- No “sassy/loud” tropes: personality stereotypes are harmful, even if meant as jokes.
School Checklist for Inclusive Events
- Send clear guidelines early: share examples of respectful themes and what’s off-limits.
- Offer alternative activities: craft tables, book character parades, STEM dress-up days.
- Train staff on responses: if a costume crosses a line, address it with care, clarity, and support.
Family Game Plan
- Brainstorm together: list five role models and five dream jobs—pick a costume from that list.
- Build a story: add a mini “bio card” to the costume to teach others who she is.
- Boost confidence: practice a one-line intro: “I’m Dr. ______, a space scientist solving problems on Mars.”
Books & Themes That Inspire
Book-character parades and “career day” themes spotlight possibility. Think scientists, engineers, judges, poets, filmmakers, coders, chefs, and CEOs—because Black girls are already all of the above.

Make October a month of pride, not pitfalls. Share these guidelines with your PTA, principals, and group chats. When we choose respect and representation, every Black girl gets to shine.
