Big Sister Circle — Mentee & Parent Guide (Overview)
PILOT What families can expect from our mentorship program: how sessions work, safety, and your role at home.
Note: We’re collecting registrations to measure community need. No official start date is set. Families will be contacted with orientation and scheduling details once the pilot cohort is finalized.
What to Expect
Purpose: Pair younger girls with caring older students for 30-minute virtual check-ins focused on homework support, encouragement, and confidence-building.
- Cadence: Weekly or bi-weekly during the pilot.
- Matching: Based on interests, subjects, and availability.
- Duration: Targeting ~3 months for the pilot cohort.
The full family packet is sent after enrollment confirmation.
Session Structure (30 Minutes)
1) Warm Check-In (~5m)
- How was your day? One “good thing” from the week.
- Set the goal for today’s session.
2) Homework Support (~15m)
- Focus on one assignment or concept at a time.
- Use screen-share or show work on paper.
3) Uplift & Close (~10m)
- Affirmations and quick win recap.
- Set a simple goal for next time.
Safety, Privacy & Boundaries
- Parent Consent: Required for all mentees. Parents/guardians may observe any session.
- Approved Platforms: Zoom or Google Meet only. No personal DMs, texting, or social media exchanges.
- Age-Appropriate Conversations: Respectful, positive, and aligned with family values and school standards.
- Privacy: No sharing addresses, phone numbers, or personal accounts between mentor and mentee.
- Reporting: If a mentee raises a concern (bullying, safety, wellbeing), mentors escalate directly to program staff; parents are informed as appropriate.
Your Role as a Parent/Guardian
Before Sessions
- Ensure a quiet, well-lit spot and a charged device.
- Confirm your child has homework materials ready.
- Help test audio/video if it’s the first session.
During & After
- Feel free to observe or be nearby.
- Ask your child what they learned and celebrate small wins.
- Let us know about schedule changes early so we can reschedule.
Mentee Code of Conduct
- Be respectful, kind, and ready to learn.
- Join on time with materials prepared.
- Use school-appropriate language and topics.
- Ask questions and try your best—progress over perfection.
Tech Checklist
- Laptop/Tablet/Phone with camera + microphone.
- Stable internet connection (headphones recommended).
- Access to Zoom or Google Meet.
- Paper/pen or a Google Doc for working through problems.
Consent & Communications
- Parent/guardian completes the registration form and consent.
- Program emails orientation details, pairing info, and session links.
- We track attendance and basic progress to improve the program.
We do not share your family’s information outside the program without consent, unless required for safety.
