Big Sister Circle — Mentor Guide (Overview)

PILOT This page summarizes how mentoring works in our program. Accepted mentors receive the full Orientation Handbook and training materials.

Note: We’re currently gathering registrations to measure community need. No official start date is set. You’ll be contacted with orientation and scheduling once we finalize the cohort.

Mission & Your Role

Mission: Pair older students with younger girls for 30-minute virtual check-ins focused on homework help, encouragement, and confidence-building.

  • Be a role model: lead with positivity, patience, and respect.
  • Be consistent: reliability builds trust and momentum.
  • Be a listener: sometimes a safe space matters more than answers.
  • Be supportive: applaud effort and progress over perfection.

Full Mentor Orientation Handbook is provided after acceptance.

Session Structure (30 Minutes)

1) Warm Check-In (~5m)

  • “What’s one good thing from your week?”
  • Energy check and set intention for the session

2) Homework Support (~15m)

  • Focus on one task/subject at a time
  • Use screen-share, Google Docs, or paper

3) Uplift & Close (~10m)

  • Affirmations + quick win recap
  • Set a simple goal for next time

Safety & Boundaries

  • Parent/guardian consent required for mentees; parents may observe any session.
  • Use approved platforms only (Zoom/Google Meet). No personal DMs or contact info sharing.
  • Keep conversations age-appropriate, respectful, and positive.
  • Report concerns immediately (bullying, safety, wellbeing) to program staff.

Mentor Expectations

  • Show up consistently and on time for scheduled sessions.
  • Model empathy, patience, and constructive feedback.
  • Prioritize encouragement and progress over perfection.
  • Follow the Mentor Orientation guidance and program policies.

Quick FAQ

  • How often do we meet? Weekly or bi-weekly during the pilot (30 minutes).
  • How are pairs matched? Interests, subjects, and availability.
  • What if I can’t make a session? Provide advance notice so we can reschedule. Repeated no-shows may remove mentors from the pilot.
